Large importers operate in the sector, which are specialized in accumulators, as well as companies that operate in the wider sector of vehicles and vehicle spare parts. As a result, the sales of imported accumulators have a small share in their total annual turnover.
The overall domestic consumption of vehicle accumulators (in pieces) was on the rise until 2008. However, during the period 2009-2013 there was a continuous decline. From 2014 onwards the market recovered, but in 2020, the pandemic conditions (Covid-19) which hit Greece halted the upward trend and negatively affected the market, the size of which recorded a decrease of 5.5%, compared to 2019. In the following years (2021 - 2022) the market followed an upward trend.
In 2021 the domestic consumption size is estimated to have increased by 4.8% compared to 2020. The response to the health crisis and the normalization of the market since May 2021 (gradual lifting of restrictive measures) had a positive effect on the market under review, as many vehicle owners decided to replace the car battery, after postponing it during the previous period.
The domestic market (consumption) of vehicle batteries is covered by imports, as production is low in relation to demand.
