The domestic market of petroleum products operates at three levels (refinery, wholesale and retail trade). Production of crude oil in Greece involves two domestic oil refiners (4 refineries) and a significant number of wholesalers.
According to the Ministry of Environment and Energy, 55 companies are licensed to wholesale petroleum products, 24 companies hold a biofuel license and 46 hold a gas supply license.
The total domestic production of Greek refineries in petroleum products showed a decrease of 5% in 2020 compared to 2019.
The overall consumption of petroleum products reported an annual fall of 21.6%. Fuel consumption in the “Internal” Market” accounted for 71% of total consumption.
Automotive diesel had the largest share in the total fuel consumption in 2020 (28%), followed by marine fuel oil (24.1%) and gasoline (20.8%).
The total consumption of natural gas has registered a rise of 10.9% in 2020 compared to 2020.
