The sector of sea food processing (standardized and non-standardized) in Greece consists of many, businesses. Nevertheless, organized units of systematic industrial production of "branded" products are few and they dominate a large part of the domestic production. The sector of seafood imports includes many companies, most of which, due to infrastructure (large storage areas, refrigeration and maintenance facilities, etc.), also market a variety of other goods (frozen meat, frozen vegetables and fruit etc.).
The domestic production of processed and standardized frozen seafood has registered a fall over the period 2011-2016. However, in the following three years 2017-2019 it recovered (mainly in 2017), registering positive rates of change. In 2020, the total production under consideration shrank again, by 21.4% compared to 2019), as a result of reduced domestic demand brought about by the (Covid-19) pandemic.
As for 2021, despite the lockdown of the first months of the year, on the one hand consumers returned, to a large extent, to normal and on the other hand an increase in tourist traffic was observed, especially in the summer months. Thus, production increased by 14.5% (2021/20). In 2022, production of processed and standardized frozen seafood is estimated to increase, but at a slower rate.
Overall imports of frozen seafood registered a significant fall during 2011-2013, while from 2014 to 2018 they reported a remarkable rise.
Over the following two years (2019-2020) there was a significant fall (2020/2018: -24.6% in quantity).
However, in 2021 total imports of frozen seafood registered a remarkable increase again (2021/20: +30.8% quantity). In 2022 it is estimated to futher increase.
It is estimated that molluscs accounted for approximately 40% of the market (2019), followed by crustaceans (23%), fish with 22% and fish fillets with 15%.
34. Coffee – Coffeehouse Chains
In Greece a considerable number of businesses are engaged in processing and imports of raw coffee (not processed and packaged). The sector also includes some large-sized companies trading well-known brand names of coffee products, while their network covers almost the entire country.
The overall domestic consumption of coffee (in quantity) has reported a rise of 5.3% in 2021 compared to 2020. However, it dropped by approximately 5.4% in 2020 compared to 2019, as a result of Covid-19. The health crisis and the measures taken by the State negatively affected coffee sales in the professional channel (HO.RE.CA.), while domestic consumption increased.
Espresso had the lion’s share in total consumption in 2021 with approximately 40%. Greek coffee had a share of 36.7% followed by instant coffee with 14.2% and filter coffee with 9.1%.
The total domestic coffee market in value (at wholesale prices) showed an increase of 6.5% in 2021 compared to 2020. Espresso coffee had the largest share in this category as well (48.4%).
