In Greece a considerable number of businesses are engaged in processing and imports of raw coffee (not processed and packaged). The sector also includes some large-sized companies trading well-known brand names of coffee products, while their network covers almost the entire country.
The overall domestic consumption of coffee (in quantity) has reported a rise of 5.3% in 2021 compared to 2020. However, it dropped by approximately 5.4% in 2020 compared to 2019, as a result of Covid-19. The health crisis and the measures taken by the State negatively affected coffee sales in the professional channel (HO.RE.CA.), while domestic consumption increased.
Espresso had the lion’s share in total consumption in 2021 with approximately 40%. Greek coffee had a share of 36.7% followed by instant coffee with 14.2% and filter coffee with 9.1%.
The total domestic coffee market in value (at wholesale prices) showed an increase of 6.5% in 2021 compared to 2020. Espresso coffee had the largest share in this category as well (48.4%).
In the two years (2018-2019), coffee imports marked a significant increase, while in 2020 they decreased (-8.5%, in quantity), as a result of the appearance of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The overall sales of Coffeehouse Chains registered a rise of 10.4% in 2021 compared to 2020. A further rise is expected for 2022. Coffee sales covered 53.7% of total chain sales in 2021.
The network of eleven (15) leading Coffeehouse Chains numbered 1,641 branches throughout Greece, 51% of which are located in Attica.
