The sector experienced significant growth during the decade 1999-2008. The economic situation of the country in the period 2009-2012 (economic recession) led to a rapid decline in sales of new vehicles. During 2013-2019, sales increased on an annual basis, but remained at lower levels than those of the "pre-crisis" era. In 2020 total registrations dropped by 27.8% compared to 2019 due to COVID-19. In 2021 vehicle sales recovered as they increased by 26.4%, compared to 2020.
The problems recorded in the automotive industry, globally and especially in the EU, had a negative effect on the sector in 2022 as well, as over the first 10 months there was a marginal increase in total domestic registrations by 2% (compared to the respective period of 2021).
Passenger car registrations registered a rise of 24.6% in 2021. Registrations of light also reported a significant increase of 51.8%, compared to 2020.
Over the first 10 months of 2022 there was a slight increase in total registrations of 2%, compared to the respective period of 2021, with passenger cars increasing by 3% and light trucks decreasing by 9.5%.
Passenger cars accounted for 90.1%of total new vehicle vehicle sales, registering a rise of 24.6% compared to 2020. Trucks up to 3.5 tons followed with a share of 9.3% reporting a significant increase in registrations during the same period (+51.9% 2021/20).
