The largest part of the overall domestic market is covered by a few large companies. Subsidiaries of multinational companies are dominant among the large companies.
The overall production of detergents – soaps registered slight fluctuations during 2015-2020, with an average annual growth rate of 0.5%. In 2020 total production increased by 3.5% compared to 2019. As regards 2021, a further rise is expected.
The domestic market for detergents and soaps peaked in 2008 and then declined. In recent years it has shown slight fluctuations, recording an average annual growth rate of only 0.3% in the period 2015-2020. Particularly, in 2020 the overall domestic consumption (in quantity) increased by 2% compared to 2019. The Covid-19 pandemic and the growing need for cleaning and disinfection products contributed to this increase.
Import penetration amounted to approximately 34% in the period 2018-2020, while the export performance to approximately 36% in the same period.
The largest part of the total market is covered by laundry and household cleaning detergents, which accounted for 36.3% and 37.5% respectively in 2020. The share of dishwashing detergents and fabric softeners amounted to 11.5% and 9.8% respectively. Soaps accounted for about 4.9% of the total market during the same year.
