The sector of brewery in Greece is characterized by high concentration, as the largest part of the market is dominated by a small number of large sized breweries. The manufacturing sector also includes several "microbreweries", the number of which has increased significantly in recent years. Industry is also active in importing businesses, which have relatively small quantities of beer. Many importers also operate in the sector, which however market relatively small quantities of beer.
The domestic production of beer has presented annual fluctuations. As regards recent years, in 2018 there was a significant rise of 31.5% compared to the previous year, while a fall of 16.9% in domestic production took place in 2019. In 2020 there is a further decline in production of 14.5%, with production volume being the lowest in fourteen years. According to sector insiders, an increase in domestic production is estimated for 2021 (compared to 2020), due to the gradual normalization of the market, the strengthening of domestic consumption as well as the increase in exports.
The significant fluctuations observed in domestic production for certain years are, according to sector insiders, due to the existence of unsold quantities of beer at the end of one year (storage) which are then sold at the beginning of the next (resulting in reduced production in that year).
Over the period 2017-2020 domestic beer consumption reported annual fluctuations. Particularly, in 2020 there was a decrease of 20.7% compared to 2019, which is explained by the decline in domestic production and imports by 14.5% and 16.5% respectively, combined with a significant increase in exports (+36.9%).
