The majority of stores owned by the largest chains of supermarkets are located in Attica (approximately 44.4%), while the prefecture of Central Macedonia follows (16.6%).
The market value of supermarkets and cash & carry is estimated to have increased by 3.2% in 2021 compared to 2020, while a further rise is estimated for 2022.
The concentration ratio in the sector very high. The 5 and 10 largest chains are estimated to have accounted for 74% and 87% respectively, of the overall sector sales.
