The sector of Greek coastal shipping has made significant progress over the last two decades, mainly through the launch of new and modern ships.
In terms of ownership, the companies of Greek coastal shipping are distinguished into a) large companies listed on the Athens Stock Exchange (ASE) which are owned by powerful business groups, b) multi-share companies in which the feature of localization is dominant, as the majority of shareholders come from the particular island region and c) companies with few shareholders in which the majority of shares belong to shipping families.
During the period 01/11/2022 - 31/10/2023, the fleet of Greek coastal shipping has 250 ships, 64% of which are passenger ferries.
The total market of Greek passenger shipping has registered a slight rise in terms of value over the two years 2018-2019. Particularly, in 2019 there was a rise of 2.5% compared to 2018. As regards 2020, the total market value dropped by approximately 35%.
The market of coastal shipping accounted for 65% of the total market followed by the market of Adriatic lines which accounted for 23% while the market of ferry lines has accounted for 12% in 2020.
