The cosmetics sector in Greece is comprised of a great number of companies, the majority of which are engaged in more than one product categories. A key element which makes cosmetic businesses differ from one another is their distribution network channels.
The domestic production of cosmetics (in value) registered a fall (-7.2%) in 2020. Skin care products had the lion’s share (47%).
The domestic market of cosmetics (wholesale prices) was in decline over the period 2010-2013, with an average annual decrease rate of -7.7%, due to low consumer demand. However, it has been recovering from 2014 onwards and in 2019 it registered a rise of 2.5% compared to the previous year. However, the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak and its effects halted the upward trend. As a result, the market of cosmetics suffered significant losses and returned to 2014 levels in terms of value.
Skin care products constitute the major cosmetics category over time. In 2020 it is estimated that they accounted for about 56% of total sales, followed by hair care products with a share of 24%.
The mass distribution channel is estimated to have accounted for 50% of the total market of cosmetics in 2020 followed by pharmacies (27%).
The selective distribution channel has registered a significant fall in recent years. However, since 2016 it has started recovering, mainly due to significant discounts on behalf of companies, registering a fall again in 2020 (annual decrease of approximately 25%).
