The great coastline of Greece combined with the large number of its islands and safe seas make it an ideal place for the development of marine tourism and particularly yacht chartering services.
It is estimated that approximately 6.400 professional yachts sail the Greek seas, 65% of which are sailing yachts and 35% are motor yachts.
Across the country, it is estimated that there are about 400 professional yacht chartering companies operating today.
The total market size of professional yachting registered a rise during 2014-2018, with an average annual growth rate of 3.4%. In 2018 (compared to 2017) the market registered a rise of 4.4%. In 2019 (compared to 2018) the market recorded an increase of 11.3%. In 2020 it decreased drastically (-71.2%) as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Fares deriving from sailing yachts had the largest share in the market (approximately 71%) and motor yachts had a share of 29%.
