The market of household furniture includes a significant number of enterprises (producers and importers). Most furniture makers are very small units with no automated production. Larger industries are well- equipped, producing a wider range of products. Many sector companies are engaged in the marketing of other household goods as well (e.g. lighting fixtures, decorative items, carpets). In recent years, the presence of international chains of furniture and household goods has been significant as new stores have been established throughout the country.
The market of household furniture (total sales in value) has been in decline during the period 2008-2015, with an average annual reduction rate of -11.7%. However, the average annual reduction rate has been declining in recent years. Over the last three years the market has reported a continuous increase, while in 2018 its value registered an annual rise of 4.8%.
Imports (in value) registered a fall over the period 2009-2014 (average annual reduction rate of -11%). On the contrary, there has been an upward trend over the last four years. Import penetration in the sector of household furniture (in value), has been rising reaching 63.5% in 2018.
The furniture exports (in value) range at relatively low levels, compared to imports. However, over the last five years the value of exports has reported a significant rise.
Regarding the market breakdown by furniture category, it is estimated that the living room furniture sales accounted for almost 43.5% of total market value in 2018. The bedroom furniture accounted for 38.5% and the dining room furniture the remaining 18% of the market.
