The size of the domestic market for basic chemicals and chemical raw materials (B2B chemicals) fluctuated during 2006-2016. In particular, the impressive increase in the overall size of the domestic market (in value) over the two years 2007-2008 was followed by an average annual fall of 5% over the next five years. This downward trend was halted in 2014, with the market showing signs of recovery, as the upward trend continued in the years 2015-2016. The total value increased by about 1% in 2016 compared to 2015.
The domestic market size increased by 3.1% in 2018 compared to 2017. The upward trend of the market continued in 2019 at a lower rate (1%).
As regards the overall market of B2B chemicals, the category of specialty chemicals had a share of 57% share, followed by the "petrochemical-polymer" category with 43%.
Most of the chemical raw materials are directed to the plastics and rubber industry with a share of 36%, in 2018. Chemicals used in medicines, cosmetics and detergents follow, with a share of 14%, during the same year.
