The domestic market size for basic chemicals and chemical raw materials ("B2B" chemicals) followed a downward trend during 2009-2013 with an average annual fall rate of 5%, following the impressive increase of the years 2007-2008. This downward trend was halted in 2014, with the market showing signs of recovery, as the upward trend continued in the years 2014-2016. The total value increased by about 1% in 2020 compared to 2018 (3.2%).
In 2020, the appearance of the Covid-19 pandemic temporarily halted the upward trend of the sector as the market value decreased by 4.4% compared to 2019. In 2021, the sector shows strong growth with the total value of the domestic market showing a sharp rise of 41.5% compared to 2020.
As regards the overall market of B2B chemicals, the category of specialty chemicals had a share of 55% share, followed by the "petrochemical-polymer" category with 45%.
Most of the chemical raw materials are directed to the plastics and rubber industry with a share of 35%, in 2021. Chemicals used in medicines, cosmetics and detergents follow, with a share of 17%, during the same year.
