The market size (sales deriving from construction projects only for own account) of 7th, 6th, and 5th class construction companies has been in serious decline during 2009-2012, registering an average annual reduction rate of 18.2%. However, the years 2013 and 2014 proved to be positive for the sector of constructions, as the market size registered a significant rise (2013:9.1%, 2014:29.4%), as a result of the fact that large public construction works were resumed and large construction companies undertook and executed new projects abroad. All three class categories registered a rise. Nevertheless, the recovery of the market was halted in 2015 (revenue reduction by 5.3%) due to the political and macroeconomic developments and the general uncertainty that prevailed. In 2016 the market registered a slight fall (-1.0%), while with the "normalization" of the Greek economy, the market grew in 2017 (+8.3%). Revenues from the construction of projects for own account show a decrease of 24.7% in 2020/2019. The appearance of the Covid-19 pandemic also in Greece since March 2020 affected, to a certain extent, the sector under consideration.
The companies registered under the 7th class have the lion’s share in the market (69% in 2020).
With reference to 2021, sector insiders pointed out that it is a "restart year" of the construction industry in Greece, as the value of the market is estimated to have registered a remarkable increase (+21.5%).
Taking into account the overall revenues of the companies (both for own account as well as from joint-ventures), it is estimated that the overall market of 7th, 6th, and 5th class construction companies grew by 19% in 2021 compared to 2020.
