The sector of fast-food restaurant chains consists of the following main categories: a) burger restaurant chains, b) pizza restaurant chains and c) snack-sandwich restaurant chains. There are also other chains that offer a variety of meals or a specific category of products (souvlaki, pies, donuts, crepes, etc.), which own a significant number of stores with a wide geographical distribution.
The examined market is characterized by intense competition which mainly regards providing affordable food solutions, sophisticated delivery services and a variety of menus.
The total number of 29 chain stores (burger, pizza, snack-sandwich, souvlaki, etc.) amounts to 1,231 stores (January 2022). Snack-sandwich chains own most stores (500), followed by other chains (352) and pizza chains with 208 stores. 68.1% of the stores are located in Attica.
In 2020, the overall fast-food restaurant chains market experienced a significant downturn due to the Covid-19 pandemic and recorded a 17.8% drop compared to 2019.
However, it recovered in 2021, showing an increase of 8.5% compared to 2020. Compared to 2019, the particular market did not return to pre-Covid-19 levels, registering a decrease of 10.8% (2021/2019).
The category of snack-sandwich accounted for 37.6% of the overall market in 2021 followed by the category of burger chains with a share of 27.4%.
